Summary: Six reactions to the end of episode 46 of Dekaranger - Proposal Panic. Some short, others shorter. Umeko/Sen, Ban/Hoji if you squint.
Jasmine
Even without her ESP powers, Jasmine knew. Sen's admiration for their smallest Deka had been obvious to her for quite some time. She was sorry that it took an incident as crushing as being betrayed by someone she loved to cause Umeko to see Sen in a new light, but as she exchanged a knowing glance with Hoji after Umeko and Sen fled the room, she couldn't help feeling a little excited at the thought of what might happen next.
Ban
Umeko was back to normal. Ban was glad, because a sad Umeko should never be allowed to happen. His team would finally work right again.
Except that Ban had no idea why Umeko had suddenly raced for the door. One second she'd been fine, talking to Jasmine about her horoscope and looking at Sen, and the next she'd spun around like she'd been shocked, yelled "Noo!" and run out like someone was trying to make off with her bathtub.
He glanced at Hoji, wondering if his partner knew any more than he did, only to see Hoji and Jasmine looking at each other with annoyingly superior expressions on their faces. Clearly they thought they knew something the others didn't. And they were standing awfully close together. Ban scowled for a moment, then turned to look at Tetsu. At least his kouhai seemed as confused as he was.
Hoji
As the door closed on the blurs of color that were supposedly their pink and green Dekas, Hoji automatically looked over at Jasmine. His one-time partner was already waiting for his reaction. He nodded at her as his suspicions were confirmed. Just what they needed - Umeko in love again. But at least if it were Sen, she wouldn't be running away from missions to meet someone anymore.
He was almost expecting it when Ban all but jumped him a few minutes later, demanding an explanation. "Don't call me partner," was all he said before pushing away from the table, prompting Ban to try and get in front of him, stopping him from leaving. He pretended to put up with it for a few seconds, then aimed a punch at Ban's chest. Ban dodged easily and retaliated with one of his own.
Hoji kept a smile from his face with the ease of long practice. This was also expected.
Tetsu
Tetsu watched Hoji and Ban-sempai fight with bemusement. He didn't understand what was going on - not with Umeko and Sen, and not with Hoji and Ban - but on the whole, he reflected, he was kind of getting used to that.
Umeko
Umeko ran breathlessly down the corridor, still shocked by the force of her revelation. She could hear Sen following her, and it only made her run faster. If he caught her, she would have to own up to it. It would make this - this nonsense! - real.
It occurred to her that this chase could be seen as flirting. She gasped and stopped abruptly, only to have Sen sprawl out full length in front of her. He had been closer than she thought.
And suddenly she was laughing. Sen-san looked so ridiculous on the floor, and he had gotten there by chasing her. She reached out for him with happiness radiating through her entire body, and as she began to run again, her heart thrilled at the realization that Sen was not even trying to pull away.
Sen
Contrary to what some people believed, Sen had not always been in love with Umeko. If anyone had asked him before the case with the psycho-mush, he would have been able to reply with complete honesty and a little surprise that he'd never thought about her like that. Umeko was beautiful, but she was somehow too innocent, too pure to be taken advantage of that way, even in thoughts.
Which was why the unthinking rage that filled him when Mashuu tossed Umeko's gift to the ground and stamped on it - like it, like she was worthless - took him by such surprise.
Even after Umeko deleted her betrayer and stood sobbing in Sen's arms, Sen was still so caught up in his need to hurt the other man, in the immediate and physical way that had caused him to hurl himself across the intervening space and lay into Mashuu like a street brawler, heedless of his Deka training, that he didn't really notice that he held a beautiful and emotionally vulnerable girl pressed against his body. He just held her, seething inside that someone could dare to hurt her, vowing to himself that nothing like this would ever happen to her again. He wouldn't let it.
In fact, he didn't so much as dream of feelings for her until several weeks later. Umeko had bounced up from the table, squealing over her horoscope, and then unaccountably run away from him when he reminded her about their patrol. He gave chase, tripped over his own feet, and came back up with no small feeling of annoyance only to come face to face with an infectiously laughing mouth, an outstretched hand, and eyes full of light.
Oh.
As Umeko dragged him up and pulled him after her, laughing and refusing to let go of his hand, Sen nearly stumbled from the new thought that he would follow her for as long as she would run.
