Fandom: GoGo Sentai Boukenger
Title: Prey
Rating: PG
Summary: Masumi didn’t like the new guy. He didn’t like his hair, he didn’t like his attitude, and he especially didn’t like the way Akashi looked at him. For 10_themes, prompt 03 - Envy.
Masumi didn’t know why Akashi was so occupied with finding the Ashu watcher. The guy was arrogant, rude, and looked like he hadn’t seen a comb in months. Surely there were better choices for BoukenSilver. Heck, Masumi would go out and interview them all himself, if it meant not having to waste any more time chasing this guy down.
The entire team together could not persuade Akashi, however, so when Eiji collapsed after fighting Gai and Rei, there was nothing else to do but help Akashi carry him back to SGS. When he thought about it later (which he tried never to do), all Masumi would remember about Eiji’s first visit to SGS was a smoldering fire of resentment, broken suddenly by shock and sharp fangs and white eyes and punctuated with one searing moment of clarity - Ashu. He’s Ashu; he can’t be a Boukenger now.
One glance at Akashi’s face after Eiji had been restrained told him how wrong he was. What’s so special about him? his mind screamed at his Chief. He’s dangerous; he’s not worth it; why can’t you see that? Instead he asked the question he already knew the answer to. “Don’t tell me… you still want him to become a Boukenger?” He hadn’t realized just how much he had hoped he was wrong until Akashi said yes.
Later, when Gai and Rei had disappeared and Eiji refused to join them (but didn’t mind taking the GoGoChanger, his mind sniped at him), Masumi watched him go with the suddenly arrested downward stroke of Eiji’s new weapon burned into the back of his eyelids. He willed him to keep on running.
He should have known Akashi would not give up that easily. Back at SGS, Natsuki asked the question he did not quite dare to voice. “Chief. Why do you like Ei-chan that much?”
The look on Akashi’s face recalled magma, prey, and a decision that was no decision at all. “Because he’s an interesting guy.” My prey - is you.
Masumi’s blood burned in his veins as he decided right then that he hated the new BoukenSilver, and nothing could ever convince him otherwise.
