3. Is your character progressive, using new technologies as they become available? Is he slow to adapt to technological change? Or is he middle-of-the-road, waiting to see if things work but using them as soon as he's satisfied that they do?
New shiny things interest Derek in the same way new candies in a store would interest a small child. He may not understand it 100% when he runs across it, but he's willing to at least give it a try, just to see what it does. By the same token, though, he wouldn't implement or include new technology on a permanent basis into his equipment or everyday use until he’s sure it’ll work right and be dependable.
4. Your character receives a mysterious package. There's no return address (or not one that he recognizes) and he wasn't expecting anything. What does he do?
Inspect it carefully. Outside the house.
o The package is unusually heavy and the label is hand-lettered in a handwriting he doesn't recognize.
Inspect it carefully and look for other clues such as the weight/cost stamp to see if he could figure out where it came from.
o The package is a thin manila envelope with a printed label.
Inspect it carefully, open it if he can’t detect wires or powder or unusual smells.
o There seems to be a faint vibration coming from the package and it was left on his doorstep.
Oh hell no. That gets taken to a containment chamber and opened by a robot.
o The package is large and was delivered through a reputable shipping service.
Now we’re back to inspecting it carefully…and likely eventually taking it to the chamber to be opened by the robot.
5. Does your character enjoy camping outdoors?
He’s practically lived outdoors since the beginning of his career as a hunter. He has more trouble adjusting to the fact that he now lives in an apartment in the city.
6. Does your character know how to hunt or fish? Is he good at it? Does he do it for recreation or for food?
He knows how to do both well. Sometimes, he does so to supplement his diet while on the road, more often now-adays for recreation, although whatever he catches ends up on someone’s plate who needs it, and the rest of the kill is used or sold to someone who can use it.
7. What is the one major regret your character has about his life so far? Does he plan to do anything about it, and if so, what?
Having to kill his infected parents. There isn’t much he can do about that, though.
8. What one major thing does your character want to accomplish in his life to come?
Have children and train enough other hunters well enough so that he can retire.
9. How does your character want to live out his older years?
In a remote beach house with his wife, fishing, fixing vehicles, watching over his children and grandchildren.
10. Overall, is your character satisfied with his childhood?
It was a good childhood-he has no complaints.
11. Your character has an award someone gave him sitting on a shelf. What is it for, and what are the circumstances under which he received it?
Winning ‘Best Band’ at a tribute band contest run for charity purposes.
o Is he proud of it or embarrassed by it?
Proud.
o Does he feel that he deserved it?
Oh hell yeah-he worked hard with the rest of the band to make it as good as it could be. The award proves they did an excellent job.
12. Has your character ever been arrested? For what? Did he deserve it? Does he feel that he deserved it?
He was arrested and convicted for killing his parents. According to the law, he did deserve it, although it was self defense since his parents had been turned into vampires (that point was put down as the ramblings of an insane youth). And yes, he does feel he deserved it.
13. Has your character ever struck someone in anger?
Yelled, yes. Struck, no.
14. Has your character ever killed anyone?
More than he can really keep track of.
15. Is your character adventurous when it comes to food? Does he like to try out new cuisines?
He’ll try anything once as long as it’s not overly sweet or processed. He wants to try Japanese puffer fish.
16. What is your character's idea of a perfect day?
Being with his wife and enjoying it.
17. What is your character's idea of a perfect meal?
Any dish as long as it’s done well, and done right.
18. Is your character an optimist or a pessimist?
He’s a realist. Good and bad shit both happens. That’s what life is.
19. What sort of sense of humor does your character have?
Dry, understated, mischievious, although he can use other humor as well.
20. Is your character ambitious?
He doesn’t give up on a goal, which is not quite the same thing.
21. What makes your character proud?
The accomplishments of his wife and family. His wife.
22. What makes your character embarrassed?
Innuendo, being half dressed (or undressed) in front of people he hadn’t been intending to be undressed in front of.
23. Does your character look both ways before crossing the street?
When he’s not in a rush. Otherwise, the traffic can look out for him.
24. What method of transportation does your character use? If he drives a car, for example, what kind of car does he drive?
A jeep.
25. Someone tries to rob your character on the street. What does he do? What is he carrying that the robbers might want? Is it a random incident or was he targeted?
Unless they were trying to kill him, he’d probably give them his wallet, then subdue them while they were distracted. Otherwise, he’d just knock them cold to begin with. Most likely, they would want his wallet-Derek usually looks like your average blue-collar kind of guy--not the type to be carrying much more than a wallet in the first place. And the robbery is probably random. The people that would actually target him would be more likely to sniper-shoot him in the head.
26. Does your character keep in touch with childhood friends? Which ones and why?
His childhood friends are dead
27. Is there anything that can get a smile out of your character no matter how sad or upset he is?
Seeing his wife.
28. Is there anything that can upset or anger your character no matter how happy he is?
Seeing a vampire, or really any monster or monsterous person, tearing into someone.
29. What makes your character feel righteously angry?
Rape. Murder of innocents. People who think that they are the top of the food chain and therefore entitled to do whatever they want to do to others. Child abuse. Abuse of women. Willful ignorance. Bigotry. People who live only for themselves, especially at the cost of others.
