A Boy-Scout's Journal
Monday
Our Scout Master declared this week as ‘Good Deeds Week’ and gave us diaries to write our Good Deeds. He will read the diaries and decide the ‘Best Boy-Scout’.
“Spread sweetness and light all around you. Help the aged, visit the sick, feed the poor, be kind to animals, teach the illiterate people.” He told us.
Tuesday
Our maid-servant was cleaning the utensils. I told her to leave the work and learn alphabet from me. These illiterate people can be very stubborn. She refused to learn thus depriving me of my points. When I insisted, she ran off and sent message to my mother that she will come back when the ‘Good Deeds Week’ is over. My mother is quite mad at me.
Wednesday
Today I decided to feed the poor.
Mother had made a lot of snacks for her kitty-party. I took those and gave them to the beggars around the temple.
When I came back, mother was frantically trying to phone a caterer while her friends sat yawning. As soon as mother saw me, she gave me some money and told me to run and buy some snacks. This was one more Good Deed that I did.
Thursday
Our neighbors, servants, teachers, Dad’s friends, all are perfectly healthy, so how is a boy-scout to visit the sick?
So, I was overjoyed when I heard that a distant relative had bad cold. I insisted on visiting him though he stays in a far-off suburb. Dad was tired after his office-work, but had to take me to the relative’s place after my tantrum.
Friday
I fed a whole bottle of Multivitamin tablets to the neighbor’s puppy because it looked mal-nourished.
The neighbor was peeved because he said he had to take the puppy to a vet and he blamed me for that. I just cannot understand it.
Saturday
I saw our aged neighbor coming back from the market with a heavy bag full of vegetables and ran to help him.
My arch rival Pakya also reached him at the same time.
I had to fight Pakya off and snatch the bag from the old man’s hand.
The bag tore and the vegetables scattered all over the road. The old man sat down with his head in his hands. I picked up the potatoes and onions though some tomatoes were smashed.
As Pakya is not aged, sick, illiterate or poor, I bombarded him with the rest of the tomatoes.
Sunday
Tried to help mother in the kitchen but she shooed me off, saying that I ate the raw ingredients and spoiled the dish.
Monday
The Master declared Pakya as the Best Boy-scout and now he has become too cocky for words. The way he is strutting about! Argh!
The Good Deeds week is over, but I am going to do one more Good Deed today. I will thrash Pakya thoroughly to humble his pride and teach him a lesson in humility.
