Iris
I had these strange dreams for weeks. Floating in the darkest night above a beautiful emerald world, a kindly, wrinkled woman is looking down at me reassuringly. Never able to shake these recurring dreams, I would awake haunted by that face. I filled my blogs with every detail I could recall. I also filled it with notes about my daily night walks along the beach of white sands near my house. I would time my walks for the satellites that crisscrossed over my head after 7 p.m. They moved in a straight line between the stars, north to south, sometimes west to east. One night I saw something strange. What I thought was a shining speck of a satellite was shifting rapidly, then slowly, making zig-zag manoeuvres in the night sky, before it disappeared from sight near the horizon; it seemed to be defying the laws of physics. When I mentioned this object on my blog, I got comments from ardent ufologists who cited me as proof that our government was indeed hiding something. Other commenters remarked that these sightings could be explained. They could be ‘anomalous luminous phenomena’ with obvious natural, climatic, scientific explanations. I waded through other blogs that night to see how many others might have had the same experience. There were many. One in particular caught my eye. On its home page, was pasted the image of an emerald green world. And the ‘userpic’ looking out at me was the wrinkled woman from my dreams. There were just two words on the page in bold letters: “WAKE UP”.
I awoke gasping for air. I was in a transparent glass coffin. That woman was floating ghost-like on the other side of the glass, her white hair trailing in all directions. Cheerily she said: “You have been in hibernation for 20 years. You are on an inter-stellar mission… at least you were… and I am honoured to have kept watch over you and your colleagues these past years. I have been trying to wake you for weeks now. After monitoring your brain activity, I decided to place a telepathic prompt to pull you out of your waking dream.” She pointed to the thick glass window on the bulkhead. Outside was the green world from my dreams. “We have arrived at Earth’s sister planet in the Centauri system. Before I switch on the gravity generator, let me just say, Welcome to Iris, Captain. To jog your memory: The SETI institute received a message from this system in the year 2009. The exo-planet Iris was detected in the dust disk around Alpha Centauri B about two years later.” She floated down to a console and pressed a touch sensor and the glass above me split open. I gasped and felt myself rising from the wires that connected me to life support in the capsule. Our space-faring nurse said: “Your muscles are weak, I must now take you for rehabilitation.”
