The Lab Journal
“Professor! He’s writing!” his research assistant screamed. That brought Professor Punj running into the lab.
“Oh, my god, he’s filled up fifty pages!
Vidya, calm down “don’t make “JoJo” nervous,” Punj said in a quavering voice.
“Professor, this is an epoch making event; the scientific breakthrough of the century.” We...umm.you will be a famous man.
JoJo, the orangutan turned to face Professor Punj. For a split second, an apish grin crossed its wizened face and the dull ape eyes sparkled. Then the eyes were turned down again, thick fingers wrote with skill.
Wasn’t it a good idea? Vidya beamed- Giving that journal to JoJo.
“Yes, it was,” the professor replied absent mindedly; watching the thick ape fingers writing.
“I knew! If he could read, he could write.” See...
The professor did not hear her, he only nodded. Twelve years of patient training and cognitive conditioning was paying off at last.
The News broke the next day. The story appeared in every major paper across the world and filled the air waves. Reporters came in their hundreds with questions and gifts for JoJo-the “wonder ape.”
“How did you get him to write” a reporter asked.
I taught him to read first. And…
“What is JoJo writing now?” another asked
He began with the Alphabets; we will look at what’s in his journal and keep you informed. Punj smiled
The Hindi press wanted to know if JoJo could write in Hindi.
“Will JoJo be coming to the states” an American asked.
Yes, a world tour would be a good idea. I don’t know if…
“Is JoJo akin to a human” another reporter asked.
No, we are all apes! Punj grinned. They all laughed.
Once Punj was alone, he led his imagination soar. This was an “epoch making event; the scientific breakthrough of the century” now where had he heard that?
He was famous. He would be invited to every Scientific Symposia. He would be, the man who accomplished the impossible, the genius of cognitive biology- the Pavlov of the era. He saw himself on the news channels with JoJo tagging along, pen and journal in hand.
An Indian scientist had finally made a break through in cognitive ethology. He looked back at all the long years of frustrating effort, the sacrifices. That was over now.
“Professor”
Yes, I know Vidya, The minister for science and technology is coming tomorrow.
“It’s not that”
She held up a journal, “it’s JoJo’s book” she whispered
Finally! Let’s see, what our little naughty “Bandar’s” been writing? Punj smiled, as he took the Journal.
He opened the Journal; written neatly in childlike cursive, filling the two hundred pages were the words.
JoJo is lonely. JoJo is not happy here. He wants to go home. JoJo is lonely. JoJo is not happy here. He wants to go home. JoJo is lonely. JoJo is not happy here. He wants to go home. JoJo is lonely…….
