Apply to jobs really freaking sucks

I had my little "jobs applied for" counter in the bottom of each post but frankly I'm not entirely sure how many I'm up to at this point for 2012. I think the correct number is 23. We'll say it's 23 anyway ( Read more... )

At UNC at least, a lot of times they have a 'job opening,' it's not really an opening. Our employees have to 'apply' for their own positions when one is created, so a lot of the time they already have someone in mind for the job and aren't going to even look at any other resumes because that person obviously isn't going to leave. This happened in my lab with asshole-Michigan-Shane and Kathleen, and we remember feeling bad for anyone who thought it was a real position and applied. That could be part of what's going on with you. Not sure I have anything really useful to say, but if it's a university Thing then maybe non-uni jobs might be something to look into?

That is actually something I had never considered and is really helpful to know. I have applied for a few non-university jobs, but there have been less of them that seem to fit me (still looking of course though). I would have a virtually guaranteed job available when my supervisor retires this year but there is a six month window in which that can happen so meh.
