The Ballroom at Midnight

She sits there, a perfect picture of beauty and composure. No one has dared to say a thing, no one has stopped to stare or wonder. She’s frightening.
She looks to the world as though nothing is amiss… but it’s almost midnight and she’s still waiting.

The ball has started hours ago. She had, of course, arrived ‘fashionably late’ as she always has and most likely always will. As the hands of the clock take their time around the face, it has become too late for James to arrive in any similar fashion.

Many have asked her to dance, but she’s refused everyone. She sits like a marble statue in a park. She is radiant, even as a wallflower. She is quite probably the most beautiful girl in the room. It is obvious how much time she’s spent perfecting her look, and this makes the fact that she hasn’t moved since arriving all the more tragic.

Her stubbornness is something to be admired. To be stood up and still make it look like something you wish might happen to you. Though to the keener eye, it’s obvious she is tormented. It’s enticing to witness. Her cold pride and posture, something that has never been known to falter, begins to waver… due to the thoughtlessness of a teenage boy.

The night stretches on forever and then the band finally cues up to play their final song and most couples are exhausted by now. It startles everyone when the ballroom doors burst open.

He is wearing dress robes but he looks as though he has been running through the Forbidden Forest. His hair is much messier than usual and his face holds a rushed sort of glow.

He easily picks her out from the dwindling crowd and in quick strides moves to her.

“Narcissa… I-” His explanations or excuses die on his tongue as her hand, gloved in white, hits his face. He doesn’t turn his head to soften the blow, even though he sees it coming.

She says nothing, but the look in her eyes is furious and wounded. To the by-standers it looks like a righteous revenge, but they don’t recognize the unspoken clemency.

They are an incredibly handsome couple, she adorned in white and he in black. Their contrast draws all the attention in the room.

He says nothing else, gives no more excuses or even an apology. He takes her hand and pulls her onto the dance floor.
