Title: Did You See What I Did?
Pairing: James Potter/Narcissa Black
Prompt&Community: "Did You See What I Did?" @ 7spells
Summary: Narcissa doesn't belong among the tons of screaming Quidditch fans.

Narcissa dislikes Quidditch very much. It’s barbaric and distasteful. There are unpleasant smells and obnoxious noises. She is always out of place. Yet, he always insists she come to his games like a child craving attention. And usually, after much debate, she gives in.

Like today, she sits as still as she can in the crowd of avid fans. She tries not to touch any of the sweaty, hollering, lunatics on either side and wishes she would have worn something less flattering when she catches a few pairs of eyes look her up and down.

There is no reason she should be here. It’s not like James won’t recap her on every last moment of the game whether she saw it or not. “Did you see that one pass?” “What did you think of that save, huh?” “That one collision was awesome!” And she would have to pretend she understands and is half as enthused as he is.

She bunches her shoulders together and closes her eyes when a fan crawls over her to get to the aisle. She wonders why she ever lets herself get talked into coming here. What is she doing here?

The crowd suddenly goes wild and she realizes someone must have scored a goal. She wonders if that means the game will be over soon. The people are unforgiving as they push and shove each other in celebration, tipping a young man into her lap. She shoves him to the ground and stands up in outrage. What is she doing here?

She heads for the aisle but has to muscle her way through clusters of people. Another goal is made and the announcer screams: “The snitch has been spotted!” Narcissa covers her ears with her hands as the crowd goes wild again, she’s afraid of being trampled.

There is nothing but noise and people jumping up and down. She can’t tell which way to go to get out of there; she doesn’t know what she’s doing. She doesn’t understand the game, she doesn’t like crowds, she hates the blistering sun, and the yelling and the jumping and the screaming.

James should know better than to demand her presence in a place like this.

She finds her way back down to the ground just in time. The crowd goes absolutely ballistic as the seeker captures the snitch and ends the game. She has to cover her ears even on the ground. The winning team is James’s and she paces a little as she impatiently waits for him to meet her. She scowls at the crowd as they come rushing out. She doesn’t belong here, among these people. Even they can see that. They try to avoid her as they exit the grounds.

James finally appears. He comes out of the team changing rooms still in parts of his uniform; he must have hurried to meet her. He is smiling; his face looks hot with exhilaration and the stress of the game. He is flushed and his eyes are burning with excitement and pleasure. He lights up even farther when he catches sight of her.

Narcissa’s heart stops. He rushes forward and sweeps her into a hug that should by all accounts be repulsive since he rushed his shower and hadn’t fully changed. He kisses her cheek and says: “Did you see that goal?”

Narcissa nods and smiles back even though she doesn't know what he's talking about. The look in his eyes sets her senses ablaze. She grins at him and takes his hand. They walk out of the stadium and James goes on and on about the highlights of the game. She is only half listening as she gazes at his features totally vibrant in elation. It makes her happy and she changes her mind. She does belong here.
