I remember when we used to go grocery shopping right after church1. One of the three grocery stores in town was open on Sundays, at least until one in the afternoon. There was a gas station that was open on Sundays, and 7-11 only had truncated hours. All that was left was the hardware store, which apparently did thriving business on Sundays ( Read more... )

We still have truncated Sunday hours here. The joys of a Protestant fundamentalist party being the biggest, I suppose.

Some places around here still shut down. Both bars here in town close on Sundays. The gas station and the smallish grocery store stay open, though. Bars in Evanston close by ten at night. It's still nothing like my first experience with a bank holiday in London, when I couldn't find a bottle of beer, a loaf of bread, or a pack of cigarettes for blood or money!

Pubs shut early in Northern Ireland on Sundays too (11PM instead of 1AM). And Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Bank holidays in England have changed considerably these days though.

I'm not sure if Wednesday half-day closing ever existed in your part of the world but there are a few mom and pop stores (hope I'm using that expression properly) in east Belfast that still do that. Mind you, we're in a timewarp about most things here, so why not opening hours?

I don't remember a Wednesday half-day, but I do remember when I was younger, most of the stores in my hometown closed around 5pm on weekdays, except Thursday, when they'd be open until at least 7.
