I won't go into it here (though I am thinking of establishing a different blog for stuff like this since I don't think most of you care), but I've been looking into the various cases for and against "Socialized Medicine". It's an interesting and disturbing topic ( Read more... )

To go with your funny quote, consider this fact.

GM pays out more in insurance and retirement benefits per year than the Federal Government©.

Mind you, that is because both the UAW was dumb enough to ask for it, and GM was dumb enough to give it, never thinking that the auto market might not be American dominated forever. Usual short-sightedness of Board controlled companies.

I honestly don't think looking at other countries that socialized medicine is the answer, but neither is medical insurance*, which makes no sense. Having worked with a Chiropractor for almost a year now, the best answer might just be people going back to a cash system, and only having insurance for actual emergencies (stabbings, childbirth, cancer, etc).

* consider this. Insurance, by definition, is something that you buy, with both you and the company hoping that you never need to use it (car insurance, life insurance, fire insurance, etc) yet, we get Medical Insurance with the full intention of using it! It stupid, and insane, but everyone wants it!

From what I've seen of socialized medicine it is a far more practical and useful system. The system of insurance that we currently have is terribly corrupt and to me, shows that the free market is -not- the best option for all things.

Most of the criticisms that say that getting procedures takes a long time refer to elective procedures rather than life-saving operations.

And before you ask...

A series of very good documentaries on the faults in the Canadian Health care system. Note especially 'Short Course in Brain Surgery'.

You don't trust your government to tell you the truth, but you will trust it with your medical decisions? WTF man?
