I don't know about not furthering the mytharc. Given the existence of Adam and it being very demon-free even w/ visits from John, I'd say Kripke&co proved that yellow only ever really cared about Sam through his deal w/ Mary. And so Mary (and her relatives) were the lynchpin, not "Winchester".

I think this also removed some of the ammo from the "john is a horrible evil father" brigade. John did his best for adam, while doing what he needed to do for sam and dean. Kinda makes one wonder if mary had left him any info behind of what she knew of her deal w/ someone. And thus, he knew enough to know that he'd have to have Sam trained eventually? Though he was pretty revenge driven while trying to keep sam innacent, so who knows.

it was probably rash of me to dismiss any mytharc connection (that what i get for posting at 5am). i agree, though it feels like this might have been meant to show that fact more to the boys themselves, than the viewers? i was already pretty convinced of this thanks to the addition of In the Beginning to all the other confrontations with Azazel.

i hope it took the wind out of the john haters' sails. i've always thought he got such a bad rap with so many of the fans, when really, the situation was so crappy and i think he did what was best for them.

it would be so cool to find out john found something like marys own journal or something. i think that would fit well in with the show as it is now...
