I was surprised at the beginning that it was so much more complicated for me than I thought it would be, breast feeding. I was about ready to give up and made a last minute call to a La Leche League rep I found in the phone book. Sweet woman talked to me for 45 minutes and it did the trick. I ended up nursing for two years! Check out LLL, definitely.
I never dealt with LLL (but I knew from the mamas to go to them if things got bad) and I only ever had midwives but they were fairly helpful - and more helpful was the lactation consultant in the hospital. Izzy was born via scheduled c section after a planned homebirth was dropped when she wouldn't turn from breech. She was 9 lbs at birth and although she nursed like a champ and was wetting her diapers regularly and showed no signs of dehydration, the hospital tried to get me to supplement with formula. She was losing too much weight beyond what they consider the chart norm for breastfed newborns feeding off colostrum before the milk comes in. I believe all the iv fluids pumped into me for the c section had an effect on her as well - and the lactation consultant was on my side and told them to go ahead and release us with no orders for supplementation. I remember going home and sitting around topless for a couple of weeks after getting home while I learned how to help Izzy latch properly, dealt with my freakishly engorged knockers,
