Things That Go Bump in the Night

A crisp November evening greeted Seishirou as he left his clinic. The polluted sky painted the full moon a brilliant orange. It was an awesome sight, even if it was just barely visible amidst the massive skyline. He smiled at the irony: urban life creating something beautiful out of something so destructive. This thought stuck out in the doctor’s mind as he continued walking; it made him think of his mother.

Just as he was about to reach his van in the parking lot, he noticed a stray rabbit hopping along the sidewalk. The creature immediately stopped when it noticed the new presence about, feeling uneasy with the new pair of eyes gazing at it.

As he looked, the veterinarian thought to himself that it was very odd for a rabbit to be out in a city like this. It certainly wasn’t a “patient” of his that was trying to make its dramatic getaway; the only rabbit-like animal he had been treating at the moment was a hare. Perhaps this fluffy, white oddity escaped from an unappealing home and master, or a petshop that didn’t properly stow it away. Or -- as inspired by some of the articles the doctor read in the newspaper that day -- the idea came to him that maybe animal rights terrorists broke into a lab that evening, Blim! Blam!, freed the cuddly creature and its woodland friends, then set off needlessly ginormous explosives within the theoretical facility. This would all be in a typical Hollywood fashion, of course. The last theory sounded the most interesting, so he decided to settle on that one. Big things that go “boom!” are fun, after all. At least, that’s what he tried to explain to the Sumeragi twins every time they got together to watch an American action movie, a genre which Mr. Sakurazuka was very fond of watching at the moment.

In any case, he couldn’t help but marvel at the animal’s fear for his casual observance. He always wondered at that, how people get so uneasy about being watched by someone else. If a person felt inclined to stare at him, to watch him, as his mother used to from afar as he was growing up-- Seishirou would have been very flattered.

His cell phone started to ring. A little surprised, he looked away from his excuse for entertainment that evening and answered the bulky piece of technology.

It was Subaru. He was apologizing for calling so late. Something had happened. The young man’s voice was shaking. Someone had been stalking their apartment; they don‘t know who it could be. Subaru guessed that the person was probably most interested in Hokuto, since the perpetrator apparently came around when she was home alone. He doesn’t know if this has been going on longer than just tonight. The police were there, asking his sister questions as he was on the phone. He was wondering if the good doctor didn’t mind coming by later. For emotional comfort and support. Of course, Subaru never voiced that last part aloud; Seishirou could simply tell by the tone of his voice. More than likely, the teenager was in worse shape than his sister.

“Of course, Subaru-kun,” he comforted the boy on the other side of the line. “I’ve just got off work... I’ll be over soon.”

He smiled to himself as he put away his cellphone and started the engine. “Whoever this ‘stalker’ is, he has good taste,” he mused, taking one last look at the rabbit from the side-view window. “I wonder if the tree will agree when I feed him to it tomorrow.”
