Photoshop

My computer doesn't have any photo editing programs more advanced than Paint on there. I really really need to get a better program. I'd like to spend <$100. Cosmo recommended Photoshop 6.0. Anyone else have any other recommendations? I'm a fairly competent but by no means expert user. On my last compy, I used the computer's generic

Photoshop is good, but I don't think I'd be willing to pay as much as $100 for any of the older versions. The newest one costs a fair bit more though.
Have you tried Gimp? http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
