I wrote a great post the other day. It was witty, brilliant, and I'm sure it would have even induced vitabeata to post. See? I even used those cool LJ user linky thingies that I can never quite get the hang of.
I can't believe it nate, you made the same writing style error you always correct me on. You start your title with an undefined and unclear "This" which is never explained in the entry. And yes, anyone involved in parking tickets/towing in Ann Arbor is a fascist.
I think the crucial distinction lies in the fact that I use "this" in my title rather than as the beginning of a sentence in the body of my post. A close examination of the theme of my post will reveal that the intangible quality embodied by the "this" in the title is a pivotal aspect of my post.
Another way of framing the issue would be to ask "what if I replaced the word 'this' with what I meant by using the word 'this'?" I think the logical response is that I would have to replace it with the post itself!
Actually, a more on point criticism, therefore, would be that I failed to define exactly why it is that I never post (i.e., that which "this" signifies). The key event, which I omitted save for a reasonable inference, is that I wrote a post that was lost to the world due to the malfunction of either my internet service provider or livejournal (an investigation is still pending).
Also, when I said that my former post may have induced to "post" I meant "comment."
Its allows in titles, because titles are totally about style. Its about the hook. By using "this" unreferenced he invites you to read and discover to what "this" refers.
