I recently made a Beatles CD for someone who owned only a copy of the Beatles' 1. This was fun not only because it gave me an excuse to listen to a whole bunch of Beatles songs but also because I think that it's interesting as an academic exercise.

An interesting premise. What is the goal of this academic exercise? Showcasing breadth? Demonstrating pure songwriting genius? Making fun of Ringo?

(Sorry for the prolonged silence, by the way. I should actually have a computer in the next few weeks, which may help rectify the situation.)

Nice to have you back, Pete.

I suppose the goal would be to identify the most vital Beatles songs outside of those that were #1 hits. I would imagine that it's sort of similar to what Paul McCartney went through when he compiled the second disc to Wingspan.

Vital, eh? Interesting. Of the top of my head, I think that "Here Comes the Sun" is a requirement. I've also been somewhat partial to "Dear Prudence". "All My Loving"? "Drive My Car"?

You know what I think would also be an interesting academic exercise? "The Beatles: Chaff", a collection of nothing but filler. I think it's surprisingly difficult; even the lesser songs tend to have some redeeming quality. For example, I can't stand the lyrics to "Taxman", but that is a killer McCartney guitar part. If I didn't speak English, I'd love the song. Bonus points if you can make the list without any covers. So far, "Savoy Truffle" is my leading contender...
