Guys, I have so many feelings about Avengers. We went back to see it this afternoon, and I just can't deal with it.

1. Let's be direct and upfront here: Steve. I mean, for instance and including, Steve, having thought about what the correct way to approach Banner is, what'll BUILD THE TEAM, doing his homework, and then just executing perfectly, flooring Banner with the wholly sincere line about how finding the tesseract is what, as far as he is concerned, what Banner was brought here to do. Like, just look at Banner's expression after Steve says that. Banner is a canny, canny man and still has his suspicions about SHIELD, but just look at his face and the desire to believe on it after Steve says that line. Oh my God, Cap as a leader. I just can't even.

2. Let's be direct and upfront here: Natasha. And her everything. The line about having been started that young, her line to Hawkeye about how he does know how she has had herself pulled out and remade. Her goddamn scene with Loki, where she is a top-notch play actor and it's a repeat of the theme from the scene at the beginning with the thugs and the chair, and how you know -- the repeat later about the red in her ledger, because the things that she says to Loki are a mix of truth and fabrication, because the best lies are the ones that are partially true.

True: she knows she has red in her ledger.
True: she did those things.
True: she had those things done to her.
False: she is broken up about any of that shit. It might give her nightmares that she wakes from, sweating and shaking and not sure what she was dreaming of, but she is not broken up about it. She is not going to let it fuck with working.

Also, the line by Loki, which
destronomics and I shouted to each other at the dinner table, about Hawkeye killing her intimately in all the ways that she fears. AUGH IT IS THE MOST TERRIBLE ABSOLUTE BEST.

3. Let's be direct and upfront there: Natasha and Steve. On your return to watch Avengers again (because you're going to watch it again, right?), note how Steve doesn't need to be introduced to her when stepping off the plane and onto Helicarrier. He just calls her ma'm. Notice how he moves into her space while they're walking together on the deck of the Helicarrier. It might be the first time that he's seen the Helicarrier lift out of the water, but it isn't the first time they've met: Steve knows her. They're comfortable with each other. They have silent communication, and that moment when they're in the streets of Manhattan and trying to hold it against the aliens and the sleds pass overhead, and both of them are tired and dirty and not yet at the end of their tethers, but they can look down a bit and see that there's an end. And she looks up, and he looks up, and she looks at him, and -- yeah, they don't need to spell it out. She just needs him to give her a boost up.

I want so much fic about them working together pre-movie. After Steve gets cleared by medical -- listen, he threw two guys on their asses within five minutes of waking, then evaded capture by a whole fucking building and ran out onto the street, he is clear to leave sickbay -- she puts him through his basic paces, assesses where he's at and whether he has lost a step from having been in the ice for 70 years. I mean, the only formal training he's had is, as
destronomics put it, a week in another man's body.
On the other hand, he's Captain America.

So they work together, mostly updating his fighting style a little to deal with modern body armor and weaponry, but also a lot of flexibility and agility drills. Steve is glad for the footwork exercises when he is out trying to help Tony fix the turbine.

Nick Fury even sends them on a mission or two together.

4. CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW SMART/BADASS IS. SHE FIGURES OUT HOW TO USE THE CHITARI ENERGY WEAPONS AGAINST THEM. HULK TERRIFIES HER, BUT SHE KEEPS COMING BACK BECAUSE IT'S HER JOB AND SHE WILL DO IT.

SHE FUCKING STEERS THAT GRAVSLED, I SWEAR, BY PUTTING KNIVES INTO THE SLED-DUDE AND STEERING HIM WITH PAIN. IF I'M WRONG, PLEASE DO NOT DISABUSE ME.

5. General notes now, not just centered on the fact that I want ten thousand pre-movie fics about Natasha and Steve on a deep cover mission together and Natasha coming out of the kitchen in the safe house they're working out of with a beer in each hand, and giving one to Steve, and keeping one for herself, and them just sitting together, drinking them and neither of them saying a word -- uh, general notes:
  • For the first time, I get Loki/Thor. FOR THE FIRST TIME, OH JESUS, I WAS JUST. AUGH.
  • Dear Jeebus, I want Loki/Clint dub con. The mechanics of possession are hilariously unclear to me -- they ain't robots, but why is Science Man able to resist or something? Does that mean Hawkeye was unable to resist, and if so, why? -- but I want Loki/Clint dub con so much. In no small part because Loki kind of thinks that having sex with a human is (as mentioned to
destronomics entirely too loudly when real people were around, to Loki, like getting your dick sucked by a dog)

On the other hand, since this is me we're talking about, I am really down for Loki powertripping by telling Clint to do any number of absolutely awful things to himself that leave Clint just screaming inside his own head. You know.

Take off your clothes. Turn around. Take off all the rest of them. Put your hands around your dick. Fuck yourself with this and like it.
  • We're not talking about Coulson.
  • I repeat: we're not talking about Coulson.
  • I don't know how I feel about the Tony/Pepper. It was so delightful on the screen! And the fandom is still so stupid.
  • I don't know how I feel about the Steve/Tony. It was so delightful on the screen! And the fandom is still so stupid.
  • Guys, I really love Natasha and Banner so much. I love that he terrifies her, and that he knows that he terrifies her, and she knows he terrifies her, but she keeps coming back because it's her job. And I love that he respects her for it.
  • I was not expecting Banner feelings. All of my life, I have NOT HAD BANNER FEELINGS. SERIOUSLY I HAVE NOT HAD ANY. And then, all of a sudden, he said that he was always angry, and I cared so much about him it was frankly frightening.
  • SHWARMA, GUYS. SHWARMA. THAT CLOSING SCENE. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. THE DEBRIS ON THE FLOOR BECAUSE THEY SHOWED UP LIKE 35 MINUTES ATER THE FIGHTING WAS OVER. hawk eye's foot on Natasha's chair. Natasha with her back to the camera and her hand on (I think) Hawkeye's chair. Thor just wrecking shop on the biggest schwarma in the world. Cap at the head of the table, basically asleep with tired. Tony's dickery, including, but not limited to the fact that he insisted they go out for schwarma, but didn't actually have any money, and Cap was so, so, so embarrassed.
  • Fuck, how have I gotten this far down the list without noting how infinite Cap's contempt was for Tony? They're fine with each other now, but Steve prefers to hang out with the career people, the professionals like Natasha and Hawkeye. If he wants fun, who doesn't have fun when hanging out with Thor? Tony isn't really on the list. But they have a working relationship.

ALSO CAP TELLING TONY TO PUT ON THE SUIT BEFORE THEY GO FIGHTING BECAUSE OTHERWISE STEVE WILL JUST FLATTEN HIM, AND TONY'S HABIT OF NEEDLING EVERYBODY ABOUT THEIR SORE POINT, AND TONY'S MASSIVE BUTTHURT ABOUT HOWARD LIKING STEVE BETTER AND SAYING THAT EVERYTHING SPECIAL ABOUT STEVE CAME OUT OF A BOTTLE AND STEVE KNOWING THAT ALMOST EVERYTHING TONY DOES IS FOR HIMSELF (EXCEPT MAYBE DEATH IN SPACE) AND BUCKY WAS ONE OF THE 10 GUYS WHO WEREN'T GENIUSES, PHILANTHROPISTS, OR ALDKFJ;ILWUELFKJDLFKJDF
  • PS, FLYING MONKEYS.
  • Speaking of which: Hawkeye and Natasha were totally on different sides in Budapest. They were trying to kill each other/each other's agents, and this is, for Natasha, not a terrible memory.
  • And in closing, guys, we got Death in Space. I don't care if Tony technically survived: the intent was there. He was going to DIS, and Pepper didn't pick up the phone. I LOVE IT.
