Author’s Notes: I’ve been having quite a writer’s block for the past few days and when the idea on how to start this came to me, I just couldn’t abandon it. So, I wrote until I finished it. It’s my first YooSu; I hope you like it. ^^
Disclaimers: None of the Dong Bang Shin Ki boys are mine no matter how much I wish they would be. The events below are purely a figment of my over-active imagination. The plot is mine.

A Little Past Bedtime
Nothing is constant, YooChun says when asked about the future. He tells you that no matter how much he wishes Dong Bang Shin Ki to be together forever, there is no way to be certain about it. After all, forever is just a word romantics have made up.
But aren’t you a romantic, YunHo asks and YooChun laughs-Only in banjun dramas, hyung.
JaeJoong rolls his eyes, deciding it is better not to say anything. ChangMin adjusts his glasses and tells YooChun that he isn’t entirely correct. Forever may not exist but Dong Bang Shin Ki will never die with the passage of time. And YooChun hyung is a romantic even when not in banjun dramas.
The last sentence earns ChangMin a playful punch-Dare you say you know me better?-and what would be a start of a tickling session if it were not for JunSu’s voice rising above the noise.
Forever exists.
YooChun shakes his head-Stop being naïve, JunSu.
I’m not. I know forever exists.
*
I don’t plan on getting married, YooChun answers when asked about his plans after Dong Bang Shin Ki. None of the members ask why he chooses to live his life alone, without a wife to take care of him. They know why; his parent’s separation has left a deep scar on him. He’s scared of committing, scared of the possibility that he might repeat the same mistake. So every time the interview swings that way, one of them decides to tell more than he is allowed to, detailing every part of what he would want in his future wife.
YunHo talks about it the most and they believe that he will be the first one to marry. ChangMin talks about studying first and then finding love along the way. JaeJoong says he will, most probably, marry a fan and the girl interviewing them tells him that the fans will probably be very happy with his answer. JunSu says he will have two kids and a wife so beautiful, no one else can compare.
Yet all the time he is saying this, he holds onto YooChun’s hand as if telling the latter something.
And YooChun tries not to hold on too much.
*
YunHo gets married at thirty, just after SM Entertainment decides that Dong Bang Shin Ki should take their last bow. They all attend the ceremonies and they even sing for YunHo and his bride. Everyone comments on how perfect they look and they agree; the smile on their leader’s face is enough proof of how happy he is.
ChangMin quickly signs in for a Masters degree and he gets into the University of his choice with ease. JaeJoong, to their surprise, signs in for the same degree. He says he has more to learn and he still has time to do it. No one prods him to admit that he just wants to be with ChangMin.
JunSu takes YooChun’s hand and tells him they could form a duo. The latter blinks at this sudden decision-Aren’t you supposed to be looking for your bride?-but JunSu tightens his grip on YooChun’s hand and tells him that there’s no way he’ll abandon him.
Plus-JunSu adds-we’d be perpect together.
*
Their duo gains more fans than YooChun expects. Cassiopeia and BigEast are revived, this time supporting only the both of them. SM Entertainment is happy and very pleased that they took JunSu’s suggestion seriously.
JunSu smiles brightly at everyone, leaning slightly to whisper at his friend’s ear-Told you we’d be perfect.
And YooChun can’t help but smile as big as well.
They are.
*
He sees JunSu with HeeBon more than twice. They talk with each other, joke around. It is not out of the ordinary, he supposes; they are good friends after all. Even friends can have candlelit dinners.
He rolls his eyes-Park YooChun, have you gone insane?
He knows, knows damn well what is happening. JunSu has found her, the woman who would make him happy and would bear his children. And pretty soon, it would be thirty years old again.
It hasn’t been that long, he assures himself. He has just turned thirty five. He can’t have forgotten how it is to be saying goodbye to a friend.
But he has.
*
He doesn’t talk to JunSu when he doesn’t need to. He doesn’t even look at him unless it is a photo shoot or a concert. He tries to keep it professional, tries to separate business from their personal lives. He needs the lines clear just in case… something suddenly happens.
Just in case.
JunSu plops on the couch, making sure that there is nothing between them but their clothes. YooChun tries not to look at him, keeping his promise to himself. The younger one says nothing but he rests his head on YooChun’s shoulder.
YooChun, talk to me.
We have nothing to talk about, JunSu.
Yes, we do-JunSu takes his hand and intertwines their fingers. YooChun tries-tries not to break his promise, his walls. But tears, his tears, fall.
You’re with HeeBon sshi.
HeeBon?
Yes, HeeBon. Do we know any other HeeBon? He is angry, he doesn’t mean to, but he is. He is angry at himself, angry at JunSu. Angry at the way he just fell and scrapped his knee, how he wishes JunSu would come with a pack of band-aids, cotton balls and a bottle of ethyl alcohol. Angry because he knows he shouldn’t be holding onto JunSu the way he is now but he does and he grips that hand tightly.
As if he believes in that silent promise.
As if he believes in forever.
He doesn’t.
He can’t.
*
HeeBon and I are just friends, YooChun-JunSu tells him in the gentlest of voices. And YooChun wants to believe because that is everything he wants to hear from his friend right now. But he knows he can’t. Because he knows that JunSu is just…
HeeBon’s getting married soon. And not to me.
*
What is this-YooChun asks. It’s been three days after that conversation and things are back to normal. YooChun smiles for the camera and for JunSu. The tension is gone; the fans are back with their wild ideas on how it disappeared into thin air. HeeBon has invited both of them to the wedding and they’ve promised to be there; there is no way I could let it pass, JunSu adds.
He smiles and puts the silver chain around his left wrist-To make you remember.
Remember?
That it’s only you and me.
YooChun rolls his eyes and laughs-JunSu yah. You sound like you’re saying your marriage vows.
And JunSu just smiles.
*
They are thirty nine when they both decide they’ve sung enough songs. Their last concert is held on the same day their first concert was held nine years ago. YunHo is there, smiling widely-proudly carrying one of his twins. JaeJoong and ChangMin are there as well, waving madly at the duo.
They sing every song they’ve sung as JunSu and YooChun.
And JunSu holds YooChun close as the latter’s voice breaks and tears fall from his eyes.
*
Why didn’t you fulfill your dream?
JunSu looks at him, blinking innocently. Even at forty-five, YooChun thinks, his friend manages to look as adorable as he used to at twenty. The younger one sighs-I don’t think I get what you’re saying.
YooChun looks somewhere ahead of them, that lake in front of the house they’ve been sharing since their last concert. He explains what he means, tells JunSu about the beautiful wife and the two kids. He describes the beautiful wife, the kids-a boy and a girl. He refreshes JunSu about the soccer Sundays, the songs he’ll sing and teach his children. The nights of love with his wife.
Oh-JunSu says. That.
Yeah. That.
JunSu shrugs and rests his head on his shoulders. There is silence, appreciated and yet hanging on like a knife poised to kill. YooChun waits because he has to. He waits because he knows the answer will come.
Nothing is constant, YooChun ah.
And it makes YooChun briefly wonder if they follow the same principles.
*
Why are you still with me?
JunSu stares at him, wondering why YooChun is asking questions like he’s not fifty. Why are you asking me that-he fires back before returning to the dishes he’s been washing.
YooChun shrugs. You could be somewhere else-he tells JunSu, picking up the dry towel to wipe the dishes. You could be with your brother or with HyukJae.
Hm.
Hm…?
Hm.
*
Because forever exists, YooChun.
He blinks at the newspaper in front of him before lowering it to look at JunSu. It takes a more than a moment for him to understand what the latter is saying-he’s fifty, for heaven’s sake!-and the other’s answer is about a week late.
But at that moment-that very moment where he looks at JunSu’s eyes-he sees what he’s been dreaming about all this time, he sees his whole life being glued together by this person in front of him. He sees the silver band on their wrists, the small promise always left unspoken.
Until now.
JunSu yah…
And that curve on JunSu’s lips is sweeter than any lollipop or cake he’s eaten before and he reaches across to touch that aging face, graze his fingers over those cracked lips and kisses him for the first time. Kissing him as if they’ve only just begun.
Am I late?
Just a little.
