Party fluff

So here's my response to the party challenge.  It's James/Lily who I love to write and Molly/Arthur who I've never written before (and after this feeble attempt probably never will again!!).  My comments/thoughts about the writing process are over at the fluff thread on the Quill.

‘Remind me again why we’re going?’  Lily frowned at herself in the ( Read more... )

Thanks for your thoughts - really helpful! I'm not sure that I'd consciously thought of a 'messy' theme but lots of the ideas I wanted to think about certainly fit within that. The bit with Harfang and Arthur was mainly just there because I thought it was fun - I agree it's completely superfluous!!

And I agree with you about the final scenes - I thought that when I was writing but I couldn't quite make the transition seem to work straight from the party to Molly and Arthur at home. I love the idea of James telling Lily that Potters always have boys!

Maybe I will try to rework this at some point - gotta keep learning!

I think it shows a lot about you as a writer that you're willing to tackle the tough characters and situations. I know I've learned a lot from just giving it a whirl. After all, fan fiction is about stretching and learning!

Thanks!! You're sweet. I'm glad you liked my attempts at humour - and drunk!Arthur!!

I thought about having James and Lily 'learn' something from Arthur and Molly but I was struggling enough with the idea of writing a fic about pregnant Lily and experienced Molly (which in my mind is pretty cliched already)that I couldn't quite bring myself to also include a 'moral'.

(And I wrote this as a treat to myself for having caught up with my NANO schedule - though now it's tomorrow morning I have another 2000 words to write. Oh well...)

A rather belated comment. I really enjoyed this. I would normally shy away from pregnant!Lily and Molly but somehow I knew that it wouldn't be sickly sweet cliché from you.

Drunk!Arthur was hysterical. Lily and James were completely believable as soon-to-be parents. I loved how they seemed convincingly young / scared and yet doing their best to cope and be 'adults' - James bored by the Ministry party and Lily so shocked that someone might guess what was going on. Ah! The solipsism of youth.

I enjoyed the Harfang and Aberforth cameos - always great to come acros unusual minor canon characters! Also liked the insight into a much younger and still sober Arthur talking about his job.

Really, really good.

Er - I thought you were British? Going to the bathroom - what's wrong with the loo? ;-)

Oh no - four months in America and I'm already losing the ability to speak proper!

I'm glad you liked it. Writing Drunk!Arthur and Pervy!Harfang/Aberforth was lots of fun. I really can't bear pregnant!Lily and wise!Molly either but I struggled to find anything else these couples could possibly have in common.

Thanks for commenting.

Oh, and I meant to say how pleased I was that you don't think I write sickly-sweet cliche. I do like happy endings and I'm definitely a fluffer at heart, so I always feel like my writing tends in the saccharine direction. So thanks for that encouragement.
