I officially have computer fail. My laptop refused to start properly this morning. I'm running a system repair, but I'm afraid that even if it works, it's the beginning of the end. I've been having problems with it for some time now: programs that won't start, issues with performance, ect, ect ( Read more... )

Oh, dear, that is indeed a sucker punch. Maybe it's just virus or spyware infected; some of the symptoms seem to point in that general direction. Remember, how Feni seems to have caught a couple of those suckers via recent ElJay DDoS attack.

If not and this really turns out to be the prelude to an end, consider getting yourself a netbook. They do not require as much an expense as a regular laptop does, but offer a decent mobile solution that, combined with a stable desktop, may satisfy your needs.

In any case, I'm keeping all my fingers crossed. I'm familiar with that situation and thus feel with you in how much that sucks.

It is, it is.

The system repair seemed to do the job of getting it back in running order, but it's still running hot (even on a cooling pad) and slow. It's going on five or six years now, (I think) so I'm sure that has something to do with it. It's just another in a long string of incidents that make me think my beloved computer is in need of a new little sister.

I need a portability aspect is more for writing than for Internet capability, so I'm not sure a netbook would be for me. Maybe? Can I load OpenOffice on a netbook?

Why not? The only difference being netbooks running on flash-based drive instead of a harddrive. You can load pretty much any program as long as they're compatible with its operating system.

Myself, I've got a Linux-based Asus and have had no difficulties shuttling my .doc files to and fro my Windows-based desktop, probably because that linux-netbook is equipped with some open source software.

I keep using my netbook for both, mobile writing as well as mobile internet. It works.
