I ended or scaled back several 25+ year friendships, realizing that I was a much better friend to them than they were to me. I adopted a cat. A lot of this resonates with me. Your thoughts and what you've been doing in life over the past few years seems to mirror a lot of things I've been trying to do. I think a lot of people have done a lot of reflecting over the past couple of years and not dealing with unnecessary crap is part of that. Good luck finding things that matter!

What a good way to put it. "Not dealing with unnecessary crap" is what I need to write in the front of my planner. Good luck to you too on this journey. Not easy, but so worth it.

Happy 40th! I'll be 40 in September and seem to be going on this same journey...though I always seem second guess a lot of my decisions and go back to what once was because its comfortable and I know it because I had been doing it for so long.

Thanks! I secondguess myself so much too. Esp with friendships. One of the people I'd cut off had a family crisis, and the other requested that I call a temporary truce to support the other. We'll see how that goes.

I just turned 37 and I'm feeling a lot of the same things - this was a good, thoughtful, inspirational piece. Thank you :)

Thanks! I think I would have hit this feeling a few years earlier but I lost my mom at 34 and it took me a few years to get back to an emotional place where I could work on myself instead of just surviving.
