I have no idea what cardamom is; I will have to research this further with this recipe.

I was going to link to wiki or lmgtfy but that's just rude, so cardamom is a spice that's related to ginger, and tastes kind of like cinnamon-ginger, but not exactly like either. It's in a lot of Indian and Mid-East cooking. If you've ever had Indian rice pudding, it's usually a pretty strong flavor in there.
