yes, i've actually flown icelandic to paris via rekyavik before, and air france direct to paris, and both were way way nicer than any american airlines, though i was young enough that i don't know how much they cost, but i'm sure my parents chose them for a good reason. thanks for the info, its all really helpful, and might ask more questions later.

When I went, I think I spent about $20-$50 a day- it might be different now with exchange rate so bad. England is the most expensive place, and generally the more southern and eastern you get, the cheaper. A bunk in a hostel is $10-$20. In England and France, a very cheap hotel room will cost $50-$70 whereas in Italy it should be around $20 ( ... )

Oh yeah, get working on your passport now, because it takes a while and it costs a lot of money to get it faster. You won't need any visas or other paperwork.

And don't worry about traveller's checks anymore, except maybe one for emergencies. ATMs are everywhere, just like here, and have good exchange rates.

Two things: one, watch some TV. I remember seeing some really great rates recently in a commercial for NY to London or something. It may have been Virgin, which is an airline I can't recommend enough. Flying them was orders of magnitude better than flying NorthWest, esp. on trans-atlantic flights. Second, go to a travel agent. They WILL get you a better price. Do some research online first, but when you go to buy, actually physically go to an agent, look sad, and get them to find you a better rate. When I flew to Japan the agent beat the best online prices by at least a hundred dollars.

Also, while it is true most of Europe is very ATM and credit card friendly, I do recommend carrying some amount of cash when not in the cities. You never know what kind of situation you're going to end up in, and having 50 euro could be what saves you.

I've been busy and not reading livejournal. I would say that due to the euro the hostel prices are a bit higher than Jennifer suggested, I payed average £14 for England/scotland and €17-19 in Ireland. I do think that you need $60+ dollars per day due mostly to accomodation. Inter-rail is the way to go with trains but BE CAREFUL when you go to eastern europe/italy. My sister-in-law told me this story about gypsy people coming onto the train at 2 am and coming into their car. She stayed up all night so that she wouldn't get her stuff stolen. Check out STA travel for cheap flights, they make you get an ISIC card $14 or something but it is worth it ( ... )
