Women vs. Women?

In English today, we discussed 'arete' within the Odyssey, which was defined as 'manly strength or virtue.' Then, we talked about the controversy in the words in the definition-- mostly circled around the word 'manly.'

So women can't be strong? Or well, manly? Or virtuous? I thought that Virtue herself was you know, born with a vagina.
