Oh dear, where to start with this. While i'm sure certain influences made me suggest the destination of Japan at the meeting of the family "Summer Holiday 2003 Advisory Committee", I think it's the fact I enjoyed that holiday so much that made me go back and actually live there for a while.
Sure, the place is full o' crazy, but it's a awesome place to live if you can pin the language down and avoid the vegtable filled doughnuts. It was partially that particular incident with the doughnuts while I was there on holiday that inspired me to study the language (to avoid repeats).
Radiography (Since I think that was intended)
Why this, I hear people often ask. Ever since being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma back at the tail end of 2002, I've had a high exposure (terrible pun) to all sorts of medical imaging. Most of it just routine follow-up post-treatment, and I gathered enough interest in it together to sign up for a week's work experience at my local hospital in their imaging departments during my school's "career night". When it came down to actually choosing a university course, I had three options; Take my laughable A-Levels and try and do computing (or a related subject) somewhere, do Journalism (working off my two volunteer jobs that weren't shoveling owl shit), or study Radiography.
Well, since i'm here in Portsmouth, studying radiography, you probably know the rest.
Digimon
Digimon would be the second anime show I started watching when ITV started getting hold of America's runoffs (First being Pokemon, obviously). I seem to recall SMTV showing it during their saturday morning slots. It wasn't until I discovered IRC, fansubs and getting hold of files without torrenting (via IRC's file transfer system, I was on 56k at the time) did I really sit down and take notice, and Frontier remains the only series I ever watched through.By the time I had started watching it, ITV had shifted to CCS/others, and I'd started to take note of other anime series.
I still preferred it to Pokemon, but that's just me.
Conventions
Never really bothered with them before, then UPAS happened, and things have never been the same. As soon as my first year started, I lept straight into the first London Expo group (Bearing in mind I hardly knew anyone at this point), cosplayed to the second one (As Light), then ended up at Amecon during the summer of the next year (As Jade Curtiss), and am signed up for Ayacon this year. Damn you, you've gotten me into this!
Touhou Project
Ah yes, the slightly mad memetastic Bullet Hell shooter series by equally mad solo permadrunk Tokyo-resident "ZUN". I still totally suck at it, don't get me wrong, but I do have
occasional newtype moments. Unidentified Fantastic Object (a.k.a Touhou 12) is looking to continue the tradition of disturbingly pretty bullet patterns and kickass music.
Who wouldn't love a series where a boss lobs an attack called "Heaven Spider's Butterfly-Capturing Web" (天網蜘網捕蝶の法) at you?
