I love these pictures, and of you, too- beekeepers and fencers are spooky and bizarre spectres, but fencers are more forboding.
one of my 'patrons' was world fencing champion in the '60's- from Hungary. He has the demeanor of the bolder men in the photos, which is such a strange manner- amusing and endearing for an accomplished old-world athelete in new orleans in this century, but ALWAYS commanding respect and curiosity. I actually thought of you when I went to see the rest of his art collection and viewed the case full of curious-looking medals.
If you don't already know it, the fiction film on this topic is the British wartime classic by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger called The Life and Times of Colonel Blimp with Roger Livesey as the old colonel, recalling his student days in Germany before World War One. It really goes into the history of Prussian duelling culture very seriously, and the duel scenes are electric
