We're certainly considering branching out to other areas, but our staff is fairly small so some things are more or less doable. I think that after we do a news promo on the Facebook thing and get our weather guy's blog set up to feed through it they want to me look at doing something with Twitter, but specifics haven't been 100% nailed down.
I've more or less fallen into being in charge of the social media aspect of things, though, so if you have any advice I'd certainly be interested in hearing it. =)
A Surprise: I'm actually rather surprised that you guys are thinking about using Facebook if you're going to already have feeds on the main website along with a comments section. What are you hoping to accomplish with FaceBook that you can't do without it?
It all really depends on what you hope to accomplish with your TV station's online presence. Say, if you're trying to find people ranting about your product, then monitoring Consumerist becomes worthwhile. On the other hand, if you're trying to just provide ways for people to stay connected to your station at all times w/o using a TV set, then RSS feeds and a Twitter account may be sufficient.
I'm certainly not an expert on the topic though so I defer to people such as Robert Scoble and Shel Israel.

Take a look at Robert Scoble's FriendFeed to get an idea of what can be done with Twitter.
