I'm not going to talk about the main story of the week. It's very sad, and the more coverage it gets the more likely someone else is to decide it's a good idea. Here are some other things that have been in my mind

Your theory about The Hobbit is far more generous than the one that most of the critics will advance, I think ;)
(I certainly think that it could benefit with a good bit of quite harsh pruning!)

The dwarves' voices weren't all that gruff (and they looked a lot taller than I was expecting, but then I suppose that's because the audience is supposed to see things from Bilbo's point of view, perhaps). They ran the whole gamut of British accents though, which I rather liked.
