Wow. Just "wow." I don't know what's more beautiful, the fact that your student was motivated and comfortable enough to ask you a question about something relevant to her life, or the fact that she turned around because, based on everything you'd said, she suddenly understood the answer. That must have been an amazing feeling for both of you. Top that off with the dominicana who wants to be a physics major, and a picture is certainly starting to emerge. You're a great teacher, and you're making a difference in these kids' lives.
Also, I have no idea how my guitar tuner works (I suspect elves), and I live in the environs of Boston, so now I'm regretting I missed that party. I don't know how to make flan, but I make a mean mint chocolate brownie.
Did I hear mint chocolate brownie? Mirith! You're nearby? I totally would have saved you some flan. I'm in the North Shore, lobstah country. Wherefore art thou Mirith?
Teaching is never dull. There are some fantastic moments of connection, but in the very next class there was the boy who was in the bathroom for 45 minutes and I kept feeling guilty because I couldn't help but enjoy the effect his absence had on the class. :P
