Is there hope?

I've been a smoker for 18 years. Basically since I was 13. I have quit on and off. The longest I've quit for was 2 years ( Read more... )

It does go away... well, mostly.

To cave in now would just be starting back from square one another day, best to just power threw this. Don't think one is ok. It has to end completely.

Also, don't know if it helps, but a wager helped me out. I promised a friend $50 if I smoked before the new years a couple years back. Then, after the new years, I extended the one-way bet to my birthday. This way the idea of a cigarette became a lot more costly, plus even more important then the money was the fact that I hate losing, so that really saved me at times.

I was actually watching an old television show from the 60's last night, and seeing the spy lighting a cigarette while in an airport made me glad I live when I do, where it's pretty much banned anywhere indoors these days. Then I immediately realized this was the first time I was glad of this fact.

Thanks hon. A bet like that wouldn't work for me (I would want to find a way around it) but I'm so glad it worked for you! :) Every time I hear of someone quitting for a few years or more I feel so hopeful!

I had better luck with licorice root. The tobacco companies import a large percentage of licorice into the US every year as a cigarette additive so you get a placebo effect from that. It's also a slight stimulant which will perk you up a bit since you're not getting the stimulant effect from nicotine anymore. They are shaped like a smoke and that should satisfy the hand to mouth need.

Someone had suggested that to me a while ago. Unfortunately I can't stand the taste. Thank you though!

If you have any African markets in the area you could try one of the African Chew sticks. They sort of taste like tea. Some healthfood stores also sell flavored licorice chew sticks:
