the lights are hot and blinding. the stage is set: two grand pianos, curled toward each other, one black, the other white. their curves are feminine; yuhao shudders when he thinks about the vibrations that slide through the varnished wood, their sounds captured in the air between the strings.

you take the white one, jay says, a gentle presence behind yuhao's shoulder. i'll take the black.

you nod. you swallow. the audience cheers.

relax, jay says. his hands nudge you gently forward and they are hotter than the lights and their warmth dissipates through you in waves, carries you across the stage, where you sit at the white piano's bench.

the audience cheers with more vigor. jay has taken the piano across from yours.

he nods. you swallow. the audience--

--fingers playing along your spine Chopin's Waltzes; he finds a spot somewhere between your third and fifth vertebrae that makes you shudder in G; he breathes into your mouth all the right notes and you gasp back their intervals; you remind me of myself, he says, and you don't reply, but you hum back in dischord; he smirks, i wouldn't have said anything either; you dream about him in melodies, but all the notes wouldn't capture what he is to you (your friend, your mentor, your teacher, your lov--
