Title Long Distance 2/?, following Running Uphill Rating NC-17. Summary Hank and Alex move past curious and into the strange new territory of 'committed.' Disclaimer Will never own, boo.
So, right off the bat, Hank's mother's revelation floored me. But that's so true to the character you've written. Not only is she selfish saying she didn't know how else to tell him, but she's clueless saying she didn't think he would care. My own mom and I had a shitty relationship before my dad moved out, and him leaving actually bonded us, so I've always had a soft spot for how situations like this affect the family dynamic

So, yes, Hank and his mother are going to have A Conversation and soon. I don't want their relationship to be shit but it will have to be for a little while - I mean, Mom is going through kind of a tough time, too! but from Hank's perspective she's just being selfish. Also the adults knowing/not-knowing will be addressed, because it's kind of skewed to Hank's thoughts on the matter and he's just spent a few months in the desert so maybe he is not thinking too clearly. You read my freakin' mind omg
( ... )
See, I can understand that this is difficult for her, too. I guess because I've been in Hank's position it's.. My own perspective is colored a bit. And I'm glad you're acknowledging that Hank's perception of what the adults know would be skewed. I'm looking forward to seeing how that all plays out

So, I mentioned it in a comment below, but I am thinking about this next chapter and cringing irl. Hank will be doing a lot of growing up I think.
Also, so that happened in my head - their conversation about how Hank is secretly a nerd and researches gay sex - and I'm not really sure if it will happen in the fic, because it just hasn't found its way to relevance yet. But we shall see.
SUITS. MEN IN BLACK AU. NO PROMISES BUT I CAN HOPE. I will hope the greatest hope there ever was.
AND. In my head they didn't go to prom together. So, Hank went with Raven and Angel went with Armando and Alex, and Sean went stag because he doesn't give a shit and Bobby and John went with Kitty and probably Jubilee. And Raven and Angel spent the whole time trying to get Hank and Alex alone so they would dance but Alex is not one for dancing and Hank was not one for exposure yet so they actually just ended up by the punch bowl whenever their dates left them stewing in UST. And then Hank and Raven were crowned Prom Queen and King (because

I'm really looking forward to the next chapter of this. I love that you don't resort to fandom tropes - but still stay true to who Hank and Alex are at the core - and you've created a lovely backstory for everyone. I'm really curious about how Scott and Logan will work into this, as well as Hank's relationships with his mom and Alex. Also, will any more characters and references (Angel and Armando come to mind) from Running Uphill be included? I'm still quite curious about Alex's life outside of Hank, who we already know quite well. Anyway, thank you for the lovely read :)
P.S. This: “Can I feed you my penis,” Hank returns, because he still doesn’t want to move, and he’s still only eighteen, really. So good and true. That is all.
Certainly! I meant tropes as in character stereotypes - say, Hank as a bumbling geek usually incapable of making a single friend past Raven. I think it makes sense within the context of the movie with his mutation and Harvard at 15, but it's still used fairly often within AUs in a jarring way. He may not be brash or cuttingly assertive, but extreme intelligence and social skills aren't mutually exclusive.
Fandom is fairly small, so oftentimes these traits come to be synonymous with the character; I know that I've unconsciously done so while writing. My problem with tropes is lack of justification (not that nerdy Hank and violent Alex aren't still very much enjoyable). If the characters are to be placed in an entirely new environment without their mutations, the way they present themselves to others and themselves will be different.
I think you've succeeded in doing that by providing very plausible backstories that explain characters' motivations and relationships.
You are very insightful about characterization in non-powered AUs. I think it's what makes AUs so enjoyable - for me, at least. Seeing how other people develop the same characters - their back-stories and reasons for thinking or acting a certain way.

And, thank you! I'm trying to bring in other characters from Running Uphill but Hank and Alex are making it difficult. But I am hopeful.
