The Softer Side of Severus Snape by themistresssnape
1. Carly was good company. Severus had been surprised to learn that she was not two or three, but just past six years old; her ailment had stunted her physical growth considerably. But her mind seemed far older than that. If he had not seen her birth certificate for himself, he would have sworn that she was at least ten or eleven years of age.
It all made sense when he thought about it, though. She'd been reading the thoughts of those around her for the last four years, at least, so adult concepts and vocabulary came naturally to her.
Of course, she wasn't an adult, or even at an adult level. Still, he could show her his potions ingredients, and tell her about what he was doing; he could explain why he added each ingredient as he created elixirs for Poppy Pomfrey; and he could point out some of life little ironies and share a laugh with her.
Carly had not yet done any accidental magic, but her Legilimency was strong and her mind was sharp. Severus had no doubt that his daughter was brilliant, worthy of the Snape name. He just wished that she could jump up and perch on the workbench next to him, instead of having to be strapped into a restraining chair.

2. Severus snorted, then sat back to finish his roast beef as Luna prattled on about the plans for her wedding reception in excruciating detail. He learned more than he had ever wanted to know about the flowers chosen for the decorations and the ridiculously enormous amount of food to be served. Since Luna was luminous with happiness, he could not bring himself to end the chattering.
When the sandwiches were all eaten and the teapot emptied, the two sat in companionable silence for a while.
“Your parents would be proud of you Luna,” Severus said. “I am proud of you.”
Luna smiled. “I suppose that I will always miss them, but I could not have had a better guardian and I am grateful that mum chose you to take care of me.”
“Ah yes, your mother and her penchant for tea leaves, “ Severus said without bite. “There was never a stranger case set before the Wizengamot.”

3. Severus regarded his wife from across the table as she buttered her toast with impeccably manicured hands. She was not a truly beautiful woman, but with her aristocratic features and immaculate grooming she rather gave the impression of beauty. This morning she was dressed in Muggle attire: an ankle-length tweed skirt and a white silk blouse. She was exceptionally close to her family, and the circles in which they moved included a number of Muggle artists, philosophers and academics. Thus, they often favoured well-tailored Muggle clothing over traditional wizarding garb. Her dark brown hair was worn tied up in an elegant knot, and her ears were adorned with simple pearl earrings.
She smiled at him as she sipped her tea. “I’ve rather formed the impression that you’re not entirely relishing your new position at the Ministry, Severus.”
He grunted. “I had expected a certain degree of maturity from my charges, considering the fact that they are no longer hormonal adolescents. It has transpired that I was sadly mistaken.”
Cordelia chuckled. Over four years of marriage had taught her a lot about the nature of Severus Snape.

"Nice to know even the sainted Arthur is capable of petty jealousy. What was he afraid of? Did he really think a sixteen year old boy was going to steal his wife?" he muttered.
"Wouldn't you have tried?"
"Probably," he said sourly. "I would have made a terrible husband. And I loathe children."
Molly Weasley laughed. "But Sev - excuse me, Professor Snape - you're a teacher."
"I thought you had more compassion than to mock the afflicted."
She looked lovely laughing with bits of grass in her hair, he thought. The front of her robe had come undone and from his vantage point her breasts looked as heart-wrenchingly perfect as ever.
He wanted to revisit the best days of his life, if only for an hour. At that moment he would have given a great deal to simply rest his head on her bosom and have a long complaint about the unfairness of the world, but that time had long since passed. The very notion made him feel childish and weak.

Bloodcult 5. "I don't know how my sister can stand it!" said Ron emphatically.
"Pardon?" she asked, shaken from her daydreaming.
"Ginny. I don't know how she can stand being married to that greasy git for so long. She should have left him long ago. Everyone knows she should have married Harry."
"Severus seems to know it, too," she muttered under her breath.
"What was that?"
"Oh, nothing. I was just thinking. I suppose I never pictured Professor Snape with all those children of his own." She probably would have found it funny if she didn't get first hand experience of what it did to the man.
"Well, he doesn't seem to care for them much, does he?"
"No, I suppose he doesn't," she said thoughtfully, realizing she had never seen the wizard show the slightest bit of affection toward his children.
Once she had seen him speaking quietly to James and almost smiling. That was another thing; she never thought the Weasleys would be so vindictive, but forcing him to name his son after James Potter just seemed to cross a line in her mind.

“The poor girl,” Ron said under his breath.
“Ron!” Hermione elbowed him.
“Is she a Slytherin?” Harry asked.
Hermione shook her head. “I’m not sure yet. She gets sorted with the first year students at the Start-of-Term Feast.” Her eyes twinkled mischievously. “I think that she would make a great Gryffindor, though, don’t you?”
Ron just rolled his eyes. “She’s related to Snape. Of course she’s going to be in Slytherin!”
The conversation then turned to Quidditch, and Hermione found herself tuning Ron out once again. Instead, she was focused on Harry. He had seemed so happy a few minutes earlier, but now…

Electryone82 7. Percy hesitated and Molly continued speaking.
"We never questioned it, son. And Arthur accepted you as one of his own. Never once did he treat you differently, although you weren't like the other boys."
"No indeed," Arthur agreed now, almost amiably. "You were definitely rather odd-- quirky, skinny, bookish, strangely conservative, but I accepted you as my son ... until you started spouting nonsense your fifth year, and even then, I never stopped loving you, Percy. I never have. You are my son, regardless of blood."
"But you knew!" This directed at Snape who winced and nodded as much as he was able under the pressure from that wiry arm.
"I knew."
"We told him, son," Molly said now, taking a step forward. "He was the reason your astigmatism wasn't overlooked early on."
"It runs in the family," Snape hissed now, finding it exceedingly difficult to breathe. "Most of my uncles had it."

“Ah, Miss Granger,” he said again, the left corner of his lips tugging into a ghost of a smile. “I do believe it should be, ‘To what do I owe the dubious pleasure, Headmaster?’”
Hermione rolled her eyes.
“Father, do you know Miss Hermione?” asked the small voice at their side.
Hermione’s eyes darted down to the small girl and then back up to the tall man. Back and forth she went until realization dawned on her. Now that she really looked, they had the same hair and skin. Thea had the characteristic bump of the Roman nose as Snape did, though hers was less prominent. The shape of her eyes was the same, though blue. Thea was lean and stringy as he was. How could she not have made the connection before?
Because you would have never thought Snape had a kid… even in your wildest dreams.
“As a matter of fact, I do, Thea,” he said and looked at the girl.

9. She’d spent the first hour wondering what ways she could convince Snape to find someone else, but the more she thought about it, gazed at the tiny baby, and read in the book, she wasn’t sure that she could trust anyone else to do it. And he’d had a point: How would the world treat his heir?
After reading most of the book and getting a better understanding of things, she felt more confident about what she had to do to care for the little one, but she still had a few doubts. How would she know if the baby was hungry or perhaps simply gassy? She didn’t want to overfeed her if she simply needed comfort. There were so many things in the book, but one thing was for certain. She was going to keep a record of everything-how many soiled or wet diapers, what she ate and when, how much she slept, or anything else! If there would be some problem, she could easily show the Healer a list of everything so that he or she could make a valid decision.

10. Hermione’s legs were shaking as she stood, and she felt the bile rise in her throat. She didn’t think she could listen to this; she shouldn’t. This was something private between Dumbledore and Professor Snape. The tears began to well up again as she murmured something about going to see Madam Pomfrey about a headache potion, turned on her heel, and all but ran to the mediwitch’s office.
Severus stared after her for a moment. “What is the matter with Miss Granger?” he mumbled, almost as if to himself. His attention shifted to his daughter, who was still tugging insistently on Dumbledore’s beard.
“What did I tell you, Andromeda? Mummy and I have told you a hundred times…”
“Mummy is with Gamma and the angels, Daddy,” said Andromeda as she let go of Dumbledore’s beard and slid out of his lap. She went to her father’s bedside and grasped his large, long-fingered hand in both of hers. “Herminny says she can’t come back.”
