1. "You're wrong."

"Since I'll be dead, and I doubt anyone will be painting my portrait, I won't get the chance to say 'I told you so'."

"Wear the ring, please, Severus. This is the last request I'll make of you."

Snape frowned, but he slipped the ring onto his finger.

The End of Reckoning

2. "I am not into bestiality," said Hermione primly, "even if it would only be one night a month. Besides, I thought Harry would like to keep Greyback for himself." She leaned over and patted Harry warmly on the arm.

"Yeah!" said Harry.

"Run along, Harry, before Remus snatches him up," said Hermione kindly.

Hermione's Choice

3. “And what would you have me do about your problem, Miss Granger?” he’d asked when she finally stammered out the reason she had sought him out.

“I … I’ve heard … rumours … that you, that you …” She blushed deeply.

“That I deflower virgins on a regular basis?” he sneered.

Hermione flushed an even deeper shade of red and then shook her head.

“No! I’ve heard that you’re discreet and gentle and … and … thorough.”

Snape quirked an amused eyebrow.

A Minor Inconvenience

4. “And why are you defending him?” Lucius continued. “Didn’t he toss you over for Narcissa?”

"I guess it's my innate sense of fair play. Severus Snape was many things - arrogant, sarcastic, and abrasive, just to name a few - but he was not a traitor."

"Yes, well, I'm sure that by now, you've found someone more suited," Malfoy said.

"Actually, I'm not seeing anyone right now," Hermione said in a near-whisper.

"Why ever not?"

An Allowable Deduction

5. “What tripe is this?” Snape said as he tossed the parchment back at the warden.

“Surprised me as well, Snape,” the warden replied as he picked up the document. “I contacted Scrimgeour personally to verify. The Wizengamot met yesterday and were presented with some new evidence regarding your case. That evidence was compelling enough for them to commute your sentence to time served - with some conditions, of course.”

“Of course. And what are those conditions, might I ask?”

“I wasn’t made privy to all the details,” the warden replied. “It says right here that a representative from the Ministry will explain all the terms and conditions when you arrive at your destination.”

“And I’m supposed to agree to those terms before I know what they are?” Snape asked. “How do I know this isn’t some elaborate plot to kill me?”

“If we’d wanted you dead, it would have been done years ago. Or we would simply have let you succeed when you attempted the deed yourself.”

Renaissance

6. Hermione grasped her glass and took a quick sip. She hoped that Denise wouldn't detect the sudden trembling in her hands. She'd left the world of magicians and magic behind after the Final Battle.. She'd been friends with one of the most powerful wizards who'd ever lived. A friend who'd sacrificed his life to defeat another powerful wizard, one with a core so evil he had very nearly destroyed the magical world, and the Muggle world along with it. (Though the Muggles had, for the most part, been blissfully unaware of the danger.) She had no desire to watch some Muggle pretending to be a magician.

What Happens in Vegas...

7. Potter obviously had strong romantic and sexual feelings for the Weasley girl. He was openly affectionate and attentive; he bent his head toward her when she spoke and frequently squeezed her hand or patted her knee. Potter and Weasley traded remarks, including some rather rude ones, with the ease of old friends. Granger and Miss Weasley also engaged in what Severus assumed was normal, friendly, female chit-chat. Weasley teased his sister, and she responded in kind. Potter and Granger likewise exchanged comments. As a matter of fact, the only two people not talking to each other were Weasley and Granger.

It seemed that after more than three years of romantic bliss, there was trouble in paradise. Before Severus could consider the implications of this remarkable state of affairs, Minerva called the meeting to order.

Ten Ways to Woo a Witch

8. Snape slipped his wand out of his sleeve and glided on silent feet toward his unsuspecting victim. Her back was to him and she was obviously quite enthralled with whatever she was reading, so she didn’t hear his approach. He hadn’t been a spy for nearly twenty years for nothing.

He leaned over the girl’s shoulder. Anyone looking on might have thought he was about to whisper in her ear.

“What is the meaning of this?” he thundered.

The girl squealed and the book she’d been reading flew up into the air. She picked up her wand from the table and spun toward the intruder in one swift, graceful movement.

As the Pages Turn

9. “Allow me,” said a deep voice from behind her. A long, black-clad arm reached over her shoulder and easily plucked the book from the shelf above her head.

“The Egyptian Cross Mystery - one of Queen’s best,” said the man.

Hermione stiffened. She recognised that voice, even though she hadn’t heard it in more than five years.

“Professor Snape,” she gasped, turning toward the voice. Then she mentally berated herself as she realised her error. She would have remained an anonymous stranger if she hadn’t addressed him by name.

“You have me at a disadvantage, madam,” Snape replied. “Do I know you?”

Tidings of Comfort and Joy

10. An hour later, he had made the rounds through the throngs of people crowding the living and sitting rooms of the old Black house. He had felt Minerva's eyes on him as he drifted from one group of people to another. He exchanged greetings with Remus Lupin and Mad-eye Moody, among others. He endured a kiss on the cheek from Nymphadora Tonks and Molly Weasley. He shook Potter's hand and wished him a happy birthday, though the words nearly stuck in his throat. He'd even nodded a greeting to Longbottom. Now, he was standing in a relatively quiet corner, pretending to listen as Arthur Weasley regaled him with tales of every smile, burp, and fart his newest grandchild had managed to produce in his first three months of life.
