I Hate the California Public School System!!!!!

I am so frustrated. I struggled for two and a half years to get my son out of physical education at his middle school. He has an autism spectrum disorder and responded beautifully to being pulled out of PE. Now that he is transitioning into High School, they want me to start all over again. They want to schedule him into a regular PE class, at ( Read more... )

In Arizona, if there's a doctor's note, they CANNOT put him in a regular PE class. And mental is just as important as physical. Also, in AZ, PE is a class that has to be taken for one year out of four, is there a chance you can wait a year until the school knows him?

I teach kids with Autism and Asperger's , and it pisses me off that the schools don't seem to understand that different kids have special needs, and it's not always physical or academic. Unfortunately, there's not much parents can do other than being their child's advocate.

My son has a heart problem, and I was scared to death of him being in a PE class with 30 kids, and the PE teacher having 700 students, how on earth would a PE teacher notice if he's not keeping up with himself from the week before? They'd notice if he passed out, but that's not the type of problem he has.

I'm lucky, I found a great private school that has scholarships. I'd probably home school if our public school was the only option.

I'm glad you found the private school. That may be my next option too; there's a school that specializes in autism-spectrum kids within walking distance of my house. Unfortunately, to get the state to pay for it, I have to jump through many, many Special Ed hoops. ;-)

I didn't know you worked with Autism/Asperger kids; somehow I missed that. You must have a great deal of patience!

That school would be great. Good luck with the hoops.

I have tons of patience with others' kids. It's my own I need to work on!
