"You first." (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation)

________

They're just friends.

Scully reminds herself of that every time Mulder's eyes stray slightly lower than her face. When she feels his gaze sliding over her legs, while she changes her position in the uncomfortable office chair.

His voice doesn't change in the slightest. His speech is not interrupted. He speaks about dead cows and violated corn fields, his eyes flicker at her legs, when she adjustes them and then he moves his gaze up and keeps on talking. As if nothing changed, nothing happened.

They're just the best job partners ever.

Mulder gulps slightly, trying to get rid of the sudden dryness in his throat. His eyes automatically slide to Scully’s exposed legs, but then he returns his gaze to the new slide projected on the wall. Sometimes it takes him a few seconds to realize that he stared at those sexy legs. Thanking some higher powers for the unchanging monotone of his voice, he keeps on talking about differences in crop circles, while his imagination is re-playing the short snap-view his eyes caught.

"I've been checking this data last weekend and..."

"The whole weekend?!" She asks and the look on her face is a mix of pity and fear. He smiles in response. "God, you need a girlfriend."

Their eyes lock for a second and she suddenly realizes how awkward that sounded between them. The simple teasing comment falls somewhere into the thick tension that hovers around them, and Scully nervously shifts in her chair yet again. Mulder’s smile is suddenly brighter.

"You first."

She snorts, and he winks at her.

They're friends. It's frustrating, but still too precious to risk it right now.
