on calling 911

Jan 11, 2009 10:18

So last night I was driving home after a night of FUN TIMES, about 1:15 am, and it was snowing really badly. It's been my observation that when driving in Toronto, everybody sucks but me, so I was taking sidestreets instead of the main roads, reasoning that the chance of getting stuck was less than the chance of someone rearending me because they ( Read more... )

There was a bunch of us heading out to an afterhours party, 5 or 6 cars in convoy, and as we drove along a not particularly nice street, there was a mattress on fire, leaning up against a tree. Is it bad that it wasn't until the 3rd car passed that someone decided to call 911? Admittedly, this was mid 90s and not everyone had cell phones back in those dark days, but still, only one of the many people passing by thought they should actually *do* something about this.

No explosion though. Probably good for the neighbors.

Man, a mattress blowing up would have been awesomely unexpected.

One time I was driving on the highway at night and an SUV up ahead suddenly swerved across the road with a bazillion sparks shooting out of one side. It turned out they had plumb lost their tire, which came bouncing down the highway at full speed towards me and some other cars! I swerved to avoid it, and it hit a tractor trailer which shot it clear across the highway towards the median where it stopped.

A similar thing happened to me one time, except I was in the middle of a very busy highway when a guy in front of me lost his tire, so when it came bouncing towards me I though best to just hit it.

The most important thing to consider is who will play you in the dramatic reconstruction? I'd think maybe Tim Robbins might match your height.

I never know whether to stick around after calling 911, either. (I always feel too guilty to drive past something without calling.) On the plus side, I once lost a tire and pulled over to the side of the highway on a day when I forgot my cellphone, and I just stood there trying to flag down cars. When I finally bummed some stranger's cellphone, the dispatcher was like, "Are you the lady with the silver Volvo?" and I'm like, "Yeah..." So people will call things in, even if they don't stop.

Ryan is a hero!

In conclusion: Mythbusters is and always was a terrible show.
