I watched it for the first time a few months ago and had a similar reaction.
I still haven't seen Animal House, but I'm thinking maybe it won't be that awesome either.

There's precisely two awesome parts. I'd seen it for the first time a year ago and it's pretty much as you'd expect, after reconstructing it from references everywhere. But the two awesome parts are where someone throws a stereo out of a building and it plays Louie Louie and then IT'S A PARTY!!!, and then later on in the movie, when the exact same thing happens *again*.
