I used to be proud of myself for giving up TV. People would ask what I thought of this or that show and I would stick my nose up in the air self-importantly and say, "Oh, I don't watch TV anymore", as if I were some paragon of restraint. No, instead I read webcomics and lurk on message boards. One of my favorites is all about other people Read more... )

Do, rather than watch. I walked around Snoqualmie Falls park earlier today, chatted online instead of checking slashdot, and there's suddenly a good chance I'll finish the messenger bag I'm sewing sometime this year.

Isn't chatting online another form of procrastination? My sister does it often enough to keep from drawing her comics.

Are you trying to sew that bag by hand, or do you have a sewing machine?

Maybe so, but I think it's a form I can manage. One thing I hate about my habits is that when I get wrapped up in passive entertainment I go completely incommunicado.

As for the bag, it's all by hand. I don't have a sewing machine, or else I'd probably be done with it already. As it is, I have half the base done, none of the lining, and I have yet to work on the flap. Attaching the strap should be easy once I get to that point, and I designed it so I can wait 'til then to decide what kinds of pockets and pen-holders I want to add to it.

If you were just giving up something for it's own sake, I'd say you were being silly. But, it sounds like you have some definite goals in mind that you would like to be doing passive stuff. So, good luck. Just remember, there's nothing wrong with taking a break from doing stuff!
