they recognize their own scent in a certain place. so, i had a potted plant that my once-upon-a-time stray cat decided to pee in. we got rid of the dirt and everything, but then he thought it was ok to pee in the living room. so i shoved his face in it and hissed at him and stuff (really, i'm a dork) and then he stopped peeing in there. i also made sure i sanitized everything in the area so there was no trace of smell left. but he still likes to pee on the wall in the bathroom instead of in the litterbox sometimes. especially if we put down the bathroom rug. gross.

my mom told me to talk to my vet.

Critter was doing stuff like that and he had a serious bladder infection. I delayed taking him to the vet for financial reasons and now he needs a special medicated cat food for the rest of his life to keep the pH in his urine down. I recommend vet ASAP just in case. You'll either need a urine sample of leave the cat at the vet for the day and they'll get it then. Other than that, it could be a territorial thing. How many litter boxes do you have? They say you should have one box/cat, all in different places that have low traffic depending on the cats personality. If you are washing anything in the washing machine, dump like a cup of vinegar (white vinegar) in the wash too, trust me it takes out the cat pee smell and it acts as a natural clothing softner. It could be that he smells the pee and keeps returning there. I don't know, my first suspicions are bladder infection.
