Schwarzenegger Outlawed Raw Milk!

Oct 27, 2007 00:35

rance and I have been drinking raw milk for maybe a year now with no ill effects. We've been quite healthy, maybe even healthier than before we started to drink it. I haven't had a cold since last December. I like the taste of whole, raw milk, too. I usually have at least one glass a day. I can't believe we may not be able to buy raw milk anymore. We've had our own raw milk fight up here for a while. It doesn't appear as if there's an end in sight. As someone who outright doesn't like milk, I'm sort of ambivalent. I can come up with a gazillion reasons why ALL milk is bad.

In terms of not having a cold since December, I'd chalk that up to just being lucky, not necessarily the milk you've been drinking. There's nothing in milk (raw or pasteurized) that would prevent a cold.

That's not accurate. There are indeed things in raw milk that would prevent a cold. The CLA found in abundance only in milk from pasture-fed cows, and several strains of beneficial bacteria found only in real (unpasteurized) milk have been shown to strengthen immune functioning. These benefits are not available in factory-farmed, pasturized, industrial dairy products.

Raw milk doesn't have enough CLA to do much of anything, abundance or not. The amounts just aren't enough. You'd have to drink gallons of the stuff every day to achieve the health benefits and would detrimentally harm your health in other ways in the process.

As I pointed out - I'm not debating raw versus pasteurized. I don't believe that milk from a cow is meant (or is good for) humans at all. It can be made to taste good, sure, and if you enjoy drinking it, go for it, but it's not healthy. Your body doesn't need it and it was never intended for you to consume.

It seems reasonable to me that humans (like cows) are "meant" or "intended" to eat (and in fact do thrive upon) the things they evolved eating over millennia.

But since we are clearly going to remain entirely unconvinced (if not mildly irritated) by one another's assertions, "not debating" is probably the best way to proceed.

Oh, that's ridiculous! It reminds me of the situation we had a couple years ago in Iowa when they wanted to outlaw unpasteurized apple cider. We love it so much that my dad usually buys about ten gallons of it from our local orchard to keep in the freezer while it's out of season; the taste of pasteurized apple cider just doesn't compare. It's sad that we don't know how some foods are actually supposed to taste anymore...

that scare where some people got sick from a contaminated batch of cider several years ago made unpasteurized cider sales drop off drastically in the u.s. and made some places in the u.s. outlaw it altogether. it's now really, really hard to find unpasteurized cider here in my metro area. it makes me sad. :/

See my definition of cider is that it's unpasteurized. If it's pasteurized, then it's apple juice. Commercially they've been trying to change cider's definition to mean pasteurized-but-unfiltered. That's not the same.

You're right the taste doesn't compare. It's sad people grow up not knowing how some foods taste now.

Does your dad, as a Libertarian, get upset with this government interference?

It seems demented to ban the production of any type of food based on unscientific methods.

It should be the right of people to drink and consume raw milk if needed. Although, I am not familiar with raw milk - pros or cons.

rance probably would love to discuss the pros and cons with you!

It is too bad when the government tries to dictate what people can and can't consume. It's now illegal for supermarkets to sell even raw almonds. All almonds must be pasteurized in California as of this year.
