Article: 36 Hours in Berkeley, Calif.

It's nice to see Berkeley not getting lampooned for once (e.g. The Daily Show's Code Pink coverage*). The New York Times has a write-up of what they see as the best of Berkeley.

Isn't it technically cheating that the writer ventured into Oakland?

*Rightfully deserved in that case.

I love the daily show. Were those code pinkers even aware of the english language used to interview them?

I do not think they were! They seem very innocent and unsophisticated. Their protest techniques haven't changed since their youth in the sixties, and they seemed quite oblivious to the use of irony in their interviews.

A further example of their lack of sophistication: The marine recruitment center they're protesting isn't used to recruit civilians to become marines. The marines there recruit other marines to become officers. They are not preventing military growth at all. They just found a center close enough to their homes to target in hopes of getting media attention.

Then again they are professional protesters, so I find their reality quite unreal. They practice protest as a lifestyle choice. I'm guessing most of them don't have to work due to family money or retirement because they seem to have a lot of free time, including organizing yoga and bike rides at the protest site.

I am currently reading Kurt Vonnegut's "God Bless you Mr Rosewater". He seems to be addressing the philanthropic aims of the interesting and disorientated rich yuppy.

I suspect such protesting groups would attract a certain percentage of males intent to take advantage of their liberalism, naivety and money.
