8, 7, 6 - Merry, Tinsel, and Epiphany

Written for theoc_fiction advent challenge.  300 words (for all 3 prompts) !!! \o/

Ryan stared at the wall ahead of him, ignoring his wife’s hushes to their children from the other side of the house, when their eldest suddenly emerged from behind a corner with a smile on his face and shiny silver tinsel in his hands.

He watched his son stop in front of him and noticed the way his smile faded.

David studied him curiously and he looked deep into his son’s eyes - his own eyes… Dawn’s eyes.

His two year old walked up to him slowly, climbed the sofa, and stood next to him while continuing to stare into his eyes wordlessly.

“Daddy?” David finally asked before looking at the tinsel in his hands. “Merry Kistmas,” he said, handing it to him.

Ryan took the tinsel from his son and was surprised when he placed a big wet kiss on his cheek before hugging him.

He couldn’t remember any of his sons having kissed him before and reasoned that it was because he never kissed them.

Taylor emerged from behind the corner with their younger sons balanced on each hip. She gave him a small smile despite looking tired. He could tell she had been crying from the puffiness surrounding her eyes and regretted pushing her away.

He wrapped his arms around David and realized that he must have picked the kissing up from her - he had seen her kiss all of the boys countless times.

And it was at that moment that he had an epiphany - his mother would live on through his children - through blond hair and blue eyes, and their children, and for generations down the line.

“Merry Christmas to you too, buddy,” Ryan whispered into his son’s hair before placing a kiss - the first kiss he had ever given one of his children - on his forehead.
