As far as haiku goes, it's generally composed of 3 lines wherein the first line has 5 syllables, the second has 7 syllables and the third has 5 syllables. So, it's a 5-7-5 set up. The poem doesn't have to be exactly that many syllables, but that's a good rule of thumb. Also, the goal of traditional haiku is to take a snapshot, if you will, of a season and an emotion to go with that season. You never mention the season outright, but imply it through your word choice. i.e. "cherry blossoms" indicates Spring, etc. It's a great style to just get your brain moving--and it requires you to use minimal verbiage so you focus intensely on your word choice. You try to fill a lot of meaning into a very small space and make it look clean and sparse--kind of like Japanese kanji and painting.
So, now that you know all about haiku, got a QaF haiku to share? ;)
