This actual product is fairly exciting.

The dude who's pitching it is so obnoxious it's entertaining.

There's also a funny semantic thing going on about how oh no guitar hero skill is not "real" somehow and you could waste hours sinking your life into it and have nothing "real" to show for it, but ah, learning the guitar is "real".

I mean, I'm fully ready to admit that the problem with learning the guitar hero controller is that you can't easily turn skill in sightreading patterns to skill in creating sophisticated music since so much information is lost from score to button-pattern.

But that they use words like "digital" and "analog" as surrogates for "fake" and "real" is ridiculous.

It is a little bit, but frankly, beyond medium/early hard, there's not a good transfer transfer in guitar hero to real rhythm and music. That's kind of why I've switch to doing drums most of the time (now in Rock Band)--it ultimately works very well and is *directly* transferable. (I sprung for the better drum kit which does a better job simulating the feel.)

Of course, the singing isn't too bad, though you can cheat quite a bit.

I'd like to see this game available software-only, since I have a guitar I haven't really used yet. Of course, I'd also like to see good songs. :)

Oh, I don't doubt that guitar hero skill doesn't transfer well to guitar skill.

What I'm questioning is why "guitar skill" as an endpoint is considered worthwhile and "guitar hero skill" is considered a waste of time.

I mean, what do you do with a guitar except make funny noises, right? :)

Well, it's more than that. I claim that guitar hero skill doesn't transfer to any musical instrument, beyond a certain point, which is what I was saying.

Real guitars can still be played in the coming post-apocalyptic world. :) For guitar hero, of course, you can't get beyond following what it wants you to do, which is what you were referring to earlier, and I believe is a key distinction.
