I went to St. Thomas in Southington, CT, for a quasi-musical rendition of the old passion play... and about halfway through KNEW I was going to be posting a comment here. ;)
I've never really gone to see a passion play, but i did once see Godspell, and they managed a half-decent crucifixion in that production by instead of having a cross, just getting this massive nail and shoving it over the guy's shoulders while he screamed in pain. That was an amateur performance as well, in fact it was an A-level performance, so the actors were 17/18. I was quite impressed. I always found the Crucifixion in JCS kinda boring.
The Heaven on their minds riff actually sends me into transports of delight these days. I'm organising a little screening of JCS (Drewdas, duh) this easter, but i expect nobody will attend but me. I'm still very much looking forward to it, however. ^__^
Your art is, as always, gorgeous. And expect a follow on DA by a certain AngryWeeaboo.
I saw a highschool production of Godspell for the first time last year out in Chicago - and I was very, very impressed. Mostly by Peter. That kid had a voice. I was so used to my own local HS productions, which are... just bad. We produce nice instrumentalists around here, but the vocal side of our high schools is generally terribly lacking.
I agree, the Crucifixion in JCS is definitely the least interesting point. The rock opera has all these smashing, catchy earworms for tunes, and then it all ends with a wordless atonal mess. Eh, not a fan.
See, if I were anywhere near you I would jump at the chance for a JCS screening. ;) I already intend to watch it either today or Saturday - yes, Drewdas, of course. And envy everyone in Vienna going to the concert. =P
