I just bought (from a very, very nice Mormon) a 1941 Singer model 128 (in the black crinkle finish - looks exactly like this lady here) in its table and a 1898 Singer model 27 (I think) with the sphinx decals (my decals are not quite as good on the arm and rather badly battered on the plate). Nope. My mother got me the Memphis Sphinx for my birthday, and she (the Mormon) threw in the 128 for $20. The Sphinx is a treadle, which I've wanted for a while.

Singers are so hot. The 1951(2? 0?) model my grandma has is a bitch to sew heavy materials on, though.

Related sewing question: is there a a good resource for reviewing machines that are on the market right now? I am thinking of buying one of the ubiquitous Kenmores.

Yeah, heavy stuff on anything except an industrial is a bitch. I hear some of the old treadles can also handle it pretty well. But the little motor machines just aren't up to it.

Have a look at http://sewing.patternreview.com/. It's not very good for just finding out what "the best whatever" is, but if you want to see what other people thought of a particular product it's quite good. Don't worry about signing up, they actually don't send any email.
