I would definitely recommend taking the car for several reasons. The first is that a lot of the cities you've listed aren't like cities we're familiar with. They're very spread out and easy to drive in, and not easy to walk around in because everything is far apart. Not only that, America's rail infrastructure isn't designed like Europe's where you can conveniently travel and make on the fly decisions about where you want to go. That's why America has road trips, really. Our highways replaced rails. If you find out there's nothing to do in Denver, or you couldn't walk to something interesting anyway because it was too far (very likely in most of the midwest), then you'd be stuck in the vicinity of wherever your train or plane lands. Plus, its cheaper, and more romantic.
