And I went to some effort to make certain this was 100x59.

I guess Live Journal thought it was over 100x100. Or may be the 50k file size was too big for The Internets, and it got clogged behind my porn...

*waves* According to LJ, usericons and the like have to be something like 49 or 42K. It's a silly little number but, alas, thems the breaks. If you have Adobe ImageReady (I use that for my animated iconses), I'd recommend using it to save your GIF at a lower quality so that it's of a smaller file size.
